Matthew Rhys Just Made Emmy History, and He Did It Twice in One Night
Matthew Rhys won two lead acting Emmys in a single night for Widow's Bay and The Beast in Me, becoming the first performer to win the category across drama, comedy, and limited series.
Matthew Rhys did not just win an Emmy on Monday night. He won two, in two different categories, for two completely different shows, and in doing so became the first actor in Emmy history to take the lead acting prize across all three major categories: drama, comedy, and limited series.
The night started with Rhys picking up Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for The Beast in Me. He wasn't done. Hours later he was back onstage for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, this time for Widow's Bay, making him the first man ever to win two lead acting Emmys in a single ceremony. He'd already won on the drama side back in 2018 for The Americans, which means Monday's double win completed a set no other performer has managed.
Widow's Bay itself was the story of the year. The Apple TV+ horror comedy, in which Rhys plays Tom Loftis, the mayor of a New England town that may or may not be haunted, arrived quietly in the spring and built into a genuine word-of-mouth hit as the season went on. By Emmy night, it was the clear favorite in its category, having already swept much of the previous week's Creative Arts Emmys, including a first-ever win for guest star Betty Gilpin. It went on to beat out Hacks, competing in its final season, for Outstanding Comedy Series, with Rhys sharing in that win as one of the show's executive producers.
The comedy field Rhys beat out for Lead Actor was stacked: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for Wonder Man, Steve Carell for Rooster, Jason Segel for Shrinking, and Martin Short for Only Murders in the Building. Unlike the limited series race, which was considered more open, Rhys went into the comedy category as the heavy favorite given how dominant Widow's Bay had been throughout the nominations.
Describing how the creative team approached a show that blends horror, comedy, and genuine emotional weight, Rhys has said the goal from the start was to "create a real world with real people" and play it straight rather than lean into either genre. That approach is a big part of why the performance registered as more than just a comedic turn. Season two of Widow's Bay is already on the way.
The 2026 Emmy Awards aired live from the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live in Los Angeles, with Mariska Hargitay hosting.
